The copyright Breakdown
If you’ve hired a corporate photographer before, you’ve probably come across terms like image licensing, copyright, copyright buyout, or work made for hire. They’re common in photography contracts, but they’re not always explained in plain English.
One of the most common questions we hear is, “If we’re paying for the photography, don’t we own the photos?”
It’s a fair question. The short answer is not necessarily. More importantly, most corporate clients don’t need to own the copyright in order to use their photographs exactly as they intend.
Understanding the difference between image licensing and copyright ownership can make conversations with procurement and legal much simpler.
Most Companies Already Receive Everything They Need
When you hire us, our goal is to make using your images as straightforward as possible. Every assignment includes broad, worldwide, perpetual usage rights that allow your organization to use the final images wherever you need them, for as long as you need them.
Instead of worrying about whether the images can be used on your website, in an annual report, on LinkedIn, or for next year’s conference, your team can focus on putting them to work. Our standard license is intentionally broad because that’s what most organizations need.
For most organizations, that’s everything they need. Marketing teams can update the website, communications can publish annual reports, HR can use the images for recruiting, and your team can continue using the photographs for future events, presentations, and marketing campaigns without worrying about the license expiring.

When Should You Consider Additional Rights?
For the vast majority of corporate photography projects, our standard worldwide, perpetual license already provides everything an organization needs. Whether we’re photographing executive headshots, corporate lifestyle photography, or a multi-day conference, your marketing, communications, HR, and leadership teams can use the final images across your organization without worrying about additional licensing. There are situations, however, where additional rights or copyright ownership may be appropriate.
Confidential or Proprietary Projects
If the photography documents confidential information, unreleased products, mergers and acquisitions, research and development, or other proprietary initiatives, additional privacy protections or copyright ownership may be worth considering.
Legal or Procurement Requirements
Some organizations have standard contract language requiring a Copyright Buyout or work-made-for-hire for creative services. While these requests aren’t necessary for most projects, we’re happy to work with your legal or procurement team to determine the option that best fits your organization’s requirements.
Privacy and Brand Control
Some companies prefer that their photographs not appear in a photographer’s portfolio, website, social media, or marketing materials. Whether the project involves executive leadership, internal meetings, or another sensitive initiative, our Identity Privacy option provides additional control over how the images may be used after delivery.
Regulated Industries
Organizations in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, financial services, government, defense, and other regulated industries often have internal policies governing image ownership, confidentiality, or public distribution. We’re happy to accommodate those requirements whenever possible.
Commercial Products or Licensing
Although uncommon, there are occasions when photographs become part of a commercial product, publication, advertising campaign, or another revenue-generating initiative. In those situations, a Copyright Buyout may be the most appropriate solution.
One concern we occasionally hear is whether retaining copyright means your images could be licensed to someone else. The answer is no. The photographs we create for your organization are commissioned specifically for your organization. We don’t sell or license your commissioned corporate photography to unrelated companies or competitors.
For most corporate headshot sessions, corporate lifestyle sessions, and corporate events, however, purchasing the copyright provides little additional benefit over the broad usage rights already included with every assignment. Most organizations simply need the ability to use their photographs across the business, and that’s exactly what our standard license is designed to provide.
Optional Add-Ons for Enhanced Privacy and Ownership
Most organizations never need these options. They’re available for an additional fee when your organization has additional privacy requirements, contractual obligations, or ownership preferences.
